Evangelicals & Hate

As if ….

As if God views Sin like humans view Sin.

As if God’sLlove placates the demand of His Holiness and His Wrath.

As if God judged Sodom and Gomorrah, but He will not judge America because of the Cross or because America has been relatively the greatest humanitarian nation in human history.

We live in a time of the Alpha and Omega that may very well be the most debased in human history, and I swear I pen these words with no attempt at hyperbole. Even with the hoped-for overturn of Roe v. Wade, I am plagued with a deep sense of sadness and foreboding. Chants of My Body, My Choice, mind you, from professing Christ-followers, drown out the very legitimate thankfulness and hope for the millions of babies who will be spared slaughter in what should be the safest place for their entry into time and space: their very own mother’s womb.

For all of the American Evangelical professing Church’s shortfalling, most, not all, are self-inflicted; it is an inside job. Not surprisingly, the Angel of Light has convinced the Church to postulate that God hates the Sin but loves the Sinner. Only the Contemporary Church has posited this lie from the very pit of Hell. I may very well be the first, but I must inform you that God hates both the Sin AND God hates the Sinner.

The Church, from Augustine and consistently from that time until the twentieth century, has correctly understood the reality of God’s Holy Hatred. I share just a few (all emphasis mine):

AUGUSTINE (354-430, Bishop of Hippo): “For it may be that GOD hates a person to the degree more mildly, as not to destroy him, but whom He destroys He hates the more exceedingly, by how much He punisheth more severely. Now He hateth all who work iniquity: but all who speak lies He also destroys.” (Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Vol.3, p.462)

JOHN WESLEY (1703-1791, founder of Methodism): “But as for the wicked, God hates them, and will feverishly punish them.” (Explanatory Notes Upon the Old Testament, Vol.2, p.1639)

JONATHAN EDWARDS: “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much in the same way one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: His wrath towards you burns like fire: He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire: He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in His sight: you are ten thousand times more abominable in His sight than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours.” (Sinners In the Hands of an Angry God, July 8, 1741)

CHARLES H. SPURGEON: “Verse 5 – Note the singular opposition of the two sentences. GOD hates the wicked, therefore, in contrast, He loves the righteous…” (The Treasury of David, Vol.2, pp.57-58)

J. VERNON MCGEE: “ If you think God is just lovey-dovey, you had better read this (Ps.11:5) and some of the other Psalms again. GOD HATES THE WICKED who hold onto their wickedness… I do not think God loves the devil, I think He hates him, and He hates those who have no intention of turning to God. Frankly, I do not like this distinction that I hear today, that ‘God loves the sinner, but hates the sin.’ God has loved you so much that He gave His Son to die for you, but if you persist in your Sin and continue in that Sin, you are the enemy of God. And God is your enemy.” (Psalms, Vol.1, p.72)

LAYMAN’S BIBLE COMMENTARY: “God’s Hatred of Evildoers (Psalm 5:4-5)… God is not said to love the Sinner and hate his Sin; He is said to hate both the SINNER  and his SIN. This sounds harsh to modern Christian ears, but there is truth here we dare not overlook.”

MATTHEW HENRY’S COMMENTARY: “He is a holy God, and therefore hates them (the Sinner), and cannot endure to look upon them; the wicked, and him that loveth violence, HIS SOUL HATETH… Their prosperity is far from being an evidence of God’s love…their abuse of it does certainly make them objects of His hatred. He hates nothing that He has made, yet HATES THOSE who have ill-made themselves.”

The faithful, dogged disciple of Jesus Christ of Nazareth knows the only source of authority that can legitimately bind their conscience are not the words of man, even highly-regarded Men of God, but only the veritable Word of God. Let us now turn to God’s Word to hear what His Word has to say on the matter (again, emphasis mine).

Leviticus 20:23:“And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nations which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.”

Leviticus 26:27-30: “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. 30 I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies[b] on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you

Deuteronomy 32:16-20“They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations they provoked Him to anger… And when the Lord saw it [people sacrificing to devils – v.17], HE abhorred them…”

Psalm 5:5-6: The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

Psalm 7:11-13: “…God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, He will whet His sword; He hath bent His bow, and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; He ordaineth His arrows against the persecutors.”

Psalm 10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth.

Psalm 11:5-7:  The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

Psalm 78:59: When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

Psalm 106:40: Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

This blog is beyond the ability to give a full-throated Bible Study on God’s hatred of both the Sin of the individual actor AND the individual actor, but it is helpful to understand better what the Bible reveals concerning God’s love to the pinnacle of His creative act: mankind, created in the Imago Dei of God.

I credit the late Dr. R.C. Sproul for his valuable teaching on the Doctrine of God’s love:

Historically and theologically, the Bible distinguishes three types of divine love.

There is God’s Love of Benevolence, where God has a kind spirit to the whole world. His benevolent will and love fall on everybody.

There is also the sense in which the love of God is defined in terms of God’s Love of Beneficence, which refers not just simply to His attitude toward the world, but how He displays that goodness universally. “The rain falls upon the just as well as on the unjust” (Matt. 5:45) so that the universal dimension of the love of God is manifest to everyone without exception.

God’s Love of Complacency is that special love that God has for His Son and all those who are in His Son and adopted into His family.

At this point, it is legitimate to ask where Ricky is going with all of this? What is the relevance of this thesis, even if true?

What has been the response to Roe v. Wade from the professing AA Evangelical Church? I am not Gallup, but I do not believe I am not too far off the mark that it is not too dissimilar from those of

Vice-President Kamala Harris:

Here’s what that decision means: For nearly 50 years, we have talked about what Roe v. Wade protects. Today, as of right now, as of this minute, we can only talk about what Roe v. Wade protected. Past tense.

This is a healthcare crisis, because understand: Millions of women in America will go to bed tonight without access to the healthcare and reproductive care that they had this morning; without access to the same healthcare or reproductive healthcare that their mothers and grandmothers had for 50 years.

This is the first time in the history of our nation that a constitutional right has been taken from the people of America. And what is that right? — some might ask. It’s the right to privacy.

Michelle Obama:

I am heartbroken today.

I am heartbroken for people around this country who just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies. I am heartbroken that we may now be destined to learn the painful lessons of a time before Roe was made law of the land—a time when women risked losing their lives getting illegal abortions. A time when the government denied women control over their reproductive functions, forced them with pregnancies they didn’t want, and then abandoned them once their babies were born.

That is what our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers lived through, and now here we are again.

So yes, I am heartbroken—for the teenage girl, full of zest and promise, who won’t be able to finish school or live the life she wants because her state controls her reproductive decisions; for the mother of a nonviable pregnancy who is now forced to bring that pregnancy to term; for the parents watching their child’s future evaporate before their very eyes; for the health care worker who can no longer help them without risking jail time.

Speaker of House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after a Republican-appointed Supreme Court majority voted to overturn Roe v. Wade:

“Today, the Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved the GOP’s dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions. Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party and their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers.

“With Roe now out of their way, radical Republicans are charging ahead with their crusade to criminalize health freedom. In the Congress, Republicans are plotting a nationwide abortion ban. In the states, Republicans want to arrest doctors for offering reproductive care and women for terminating a pregnancy. GOP extremists are even threatening to criminalize contraception, as well as in-vitro fertilization and post-miscarriage care.

“A woman’s fundamental health decisions are her own to make, in consultation with her doctor and her loved ones – not to be dictated by far-right politicians. While Republicans seek to punish and control women, Democrats will keep fighting ferociously to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law.

“This cruel ruling is outrageous and heart-wrenching. But make no mistake: the rights of women and all Americans are on the ballot this November.”

Remember how I began this blog post?

As if ….

As if God views Sin like humans view Sin.

As if God’s Love placates the demand of His Holiness and His Wrath.

As if God judged Sodom and Gomorrah, but He will not judge America because of the Cross or because America has been relatively the greatest humanitarian nation in human history.

All three of the people I quote affirm Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior, albeit one as a Roman Catholic, but that will have to be a conversation for another day.

In response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe, we have the sitting Vice-President and likely the next Democratic Presidential candidate to vie for the highest office in the land after current President Joseph Biden leaves office lamenting, but lamenting for all the wrong reasons for a professing Christ-follower. Vice-President Kamala Harris does not rejoice in the protection of life created in the Imago Dei of God; instead, she laments that for the first time in our nation’s history, a constitutional right has been taken from the people of America.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is heartbroken, not for the estimated sixty-three million lives slaughtered since Roe v. Wade became the law of the land in 1973. No, she is heartbroken that teenage girl, full of zest and promise, who won’t be able to finish school or live the life she wants because her state controls her reproductive decisions; for the mother of a nonviable pregnancy who is now forced to bring that pregnancy to term; for the parents watching their child’s future evaporate before their very eyes; for the health care worker who can no longer help them without risking jail time.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, third in line in succession to President of the United States of America, postulates that now there is a dark day in America. By implication, according to Pelosi’s insipid worldview, America was basking in God’s marvelous light as we gave legal sanction to outright murder for fifty years that Roe was the law of the land. Please note Speaker Pelosi’s use of the term rip; “Today, the Republican-controlled Supreme Court has achieved the GOP’s dark and extreme goal of ripping away women’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions. Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party and their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers.”

Funny, when I read the word rip, my first thought was the imagery of what abortion accomplished when it literally rips the child from its mother’s womb. Yet, the Church grievously adopted the nefarious posture that God loves the Sinner but hates their Sin. Let me state categorically unless the Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama & Nancy Pelosi of this God-rebelling world repents before they take their last breath in time and space; they will soon find out how much God abhors, despises, and hates them, not just hates their SIN. As if you can separate one from the other.

If you give any cover or alignment with the God-hating worldview of Harris, Obama, and Pelosi, you too stand today under God’s Wrath. People love to quote John 3:16 but never seem to illustrate they ever have continued to read further on and quote John 3:36, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

Did you take notice of the tense of God’s Wrath? But first, did you even notice that the Bible does not shy away from its revelation that one of God’s essential attributes is His Wrath? John 3:36 informs the reader that God’s Wrath remains on those who do not believe in His Son and obeys Him. For something to remain necessitates it must be present first. Harris, Obama, and Pelosi are just three examples of millions in the professing Church who display no ability to blush as they advocate for positions God explicitly condemns and forbids. Somehow we believe we can call evil good and good evil, and God will not respond.

If your response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe does not align with God’s Holy hatred of Sin, then the Bible screams, “God’s Wrath remains on you!”

If your focus is on an alleged Constitution Right to abort life created by God in the womb (which exists NOWHERE ANYWHERE in the Constitution). If that be the case, it is abundantly clear you have no regard or sense of fear for God’s Wrath or appreciation and awe and wonder for His Holiness.

I recognize I must bring this blog post to an end. I am now on Page Six, and I know the average attention span is being pressed to its limit but let me summarize my argument for your consideration.

God Hates!

God Hate Sinners!

God Hates the Sin, AND God HATES the Sinner!

God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, He will whet His sword; He hath bent His bow, and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; He ordaineth His arrows against the persecutors (emphasis mine). Psalm 7:11-13”

God’s Gospel, the Good News, is only Good News because the Holy, Righteous Anger of a Thrice-Holy God over against the Cosmic Rebellion against His Law has been Propitiated by His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Propitiation is the act of appeasing or making well-disposed a deity, thus incurring divine favor or avoiding divine retribution

I close by paraphrasing the eloquence of my Pastor, Brad McLean, from his sermon this past Lord’s Day and changing oh so slightly his emphasis. It is imperative (my words) that the Church, His Bride, His Body, hates what He hates. The Evangelical Church must never be ashamed to make public its positions on social issues, no matter the cost.

Evangelicals must give no quarter to Sin because God hates Sin and the Sinner. If it were possible, all we would need to do is inquire of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, how much God hates Sin. The Triune God hates Sin so much that the Second Person of the Trinity, because of His love for His Father, said He would come to Earth to become the Propitiation for the Sins of the Elect (remember, here I speak of Sproul’s Love of Complacency).

Many will realize it too late of God’s Holy Hatred of Sin. I will let the words of Pastor John Piper marinate, and those who have ears to hear will bend the knee. I have attached the hyperlink for your continued study of the matter:

Sin doesn’t just hang out there with its own existence; it is in hearts or it is nothing. Sins do not suffer in Hell; sinners suffer in Hell. I wonder what people who make that misleading statement believe about Hell because he is not punishing Sin in Hell — he is punishing Sinners in Hell https://www.desiringgod.org/interviews/god-loves-the-sinner-but-hates-the-sin, John Piper).

Almost daily, I take time to thank God for choosing to Love Me. Why He chose to Love Me with His Love of Complacency leaves me utterly speechless and with a sense of awe and wonder. I am not eloquent enough to capture my heart-wonder so I can close more and more I begin to grasp the concept of Amazing Grace looking dimly through the glass but one glorious day real soon (sooner than think or realize) I will see clearly because I will see Him face to face!!!

To the extent I have brought glory and honor to God, I write for an Audience of One and humbly realize it is only because God works in me and through me. To the extent I did not strike every chord soundly and wisely, then I write as one with fear and trembling, for it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

As always, like me know what you think. Keep your hands to the plow and seek to serve for an Audience of One.

With fear and trembling,

Ricky Kyles Sr. DEd.Min

  1. House speaker Pelosi’s home catholic church is at odds with her concerning abortion and won’t allow her communion. A catholic church in DC did. We both have our differences with catholicism, but this example plays out in protestant circles all day, er day, and twice on Sunday where the appeasement of the believer, for loves sake, is far more important than the price paid to appease our God. God calls His people to holiness and righteousness lived out by His grace and the power of His word.

I pray that these, who call themselves saved by the blood of the Lamb would know His word and be transformed by it.
