Evangelical & Adversity

Some of the worst thinkers I know are people who claim fidelity to Jesus Christ!

Life, even in its most pure form, was never intended to produce equality of outcomes! In God’s economy, there were always going to be individuals of different stations in life.

That is one of the principal reasons the Evangelical Church has always endorsed “Capitalism” as the economic system best to promote the highest level of human flourishing.

It is important to note at this point, Capitalism, like any human enterprise, is subject to sinful manifestations but still, in the main, Capitalism is the best economic system known in human history.

There are innumerable variables that determine what one achieves in life. Some factors are beyond our control, but one unassailable factor we control is our Personal Agency.

None of us will be able to stand before God and attempt to proffer how roadblocks determined our destiny.

If you are not a follower of Jesus Christ, then I am not seeking to engage with you because I am offering analysis from a distinctly Evangelical worldview.

Though a man is knocked down, he is not ever utterly cast down the Holy Scriptures’ promises (Proverbs 24:16).

If He is for me, then He is more than the world against me the Holy Scriptures thunders (Romans 8:31).

He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world is another rich nugget declared from Heaven (1 John 4:4).

God is not going to drop Manna down from Heaven. He most certainly can and has done so from time to time in the past, but His normal manner is to work through normal means.

If you want something, then you have to work for it earnestly. When you encounter Satan, and all believers invariably will, then we use all the means at our disposal (prayer, Godly counsel from others, holy contemplation) to adapt and overcome.

The one thing we do not do is commence with the Pity Party and lament how “the Man” thwarted our plans.

The time between the end of slavery and the 1960s witnessed gigantic gains in the human capital of AAs.

AAs possessed a higher % of two parents in the home than their Caucasian counterparts

AAs went from a vast majority of illiteracy to a majority literacy rate at a rate never known in human history

AAs segregated neighborhoods were well kept with minor crime

The AA community is ravaged by the lack of strong males, who, when knocked down, dust themselves off and get right back in the fight.

The fact that most of our AA homes have no male presence has produced a generation of too many effeminate males who wilt under the stress of everyday life.

Here is the bottom line: Life, as we know it after the Fall, is not fair. We live in a fallen world, and every one of us contributes to its brokenness directly.

The question before us is simple: when we encounter adversity, what is our response.

Do we shrink back and find excuses, or do we “man up” and Geterdun?

The reason the majority of Evangelical marriages fail is we have no sense of commitment, even though we explicitly signed up “for better or worse.”

The reason many of us can stay at one Church for more than 3-5 years is we run at the first sign of trouble or worse because we did not get our “felt needs” met. Oh boy! Miss me with weak mess!

As always, let me know what you think. Until then, keep your hands to the plow and seek to serve for an Audience of One.

With fear and trembling,

Ricky Verndale Kyles Sr. DEd.Min
