This week I have been rebuked because another person’s faith is a “private affair between themselves and God,” according to their insipid understanding of the Gospel Truth and the Evangelical’s responsible to be Light and Salt upon the Earth.
The ideology/theology that faith is a private matter is preposterous and nothing more than a cloak to ward off accountability. Again and again, I am confronted with the depressing reality that the visible Church is laddened with unregenerate believers though many will dissent most vigorously that is not the case. Yet, all one has to do is peruse the latest Barna Report or Pew Research or digest the sobering data from the recent survey taken by LifeWay.
I believe I remember learning there are over forty “one-another commands” in the Holy Writ! [I now stand corrected, there are apparently fifty-nine variations of the “one-another” admonition in the New Testament].
God does not regenerate us to salvation to “live as an island unto ourselves” (Romans 14:7). The Universal Church is an interconnected organism that desperately needs connection to the other members of the Body of Christ.
Is it people are attending horrendous, non-biblical Churches, or it is, are they not paying attention? That, I have no way of knowing, but what I see being promulgated is severely sub-biblical.
Christ-followers are God’s witnesses upon the Earth. Thus, we are always on display before a watching world as well as a source of encouragement to fellow believers.
When professing Evangelicals posit their faith is a private matter, they are unwittingly playing directly into the enemy’s hand. Many in America are willing to afford Christ-followers the Freedom of Assembly but NOT the Freedom of Religion.
There is a vast difference. In the former, the secular elites permit people of whatever faith to attend their local places of worship and practice their faith as they see fit to their heart’s content, but per the secular elite’s worldview, people of faith (whatever it is) dare NOT bring their faith into the public sphere.
Mature and growing believers never settle for the right of Freedom of Assembly. We demand and will never relent on our insistence on Freedom of Religion, what Dr. Albert Mohler Sr. terms the “First Right” of the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.
Jesus Christ commands His adherents to let our light shine before men so that our lights will give glory to the Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). We can never obey this command from our Lord and Savior if we postulate that our faith is a private matter.
Are you kidding me? What passes for adult erudite conversation in the professing Evangelical Church is laughable on its face. Yet, I submit that this is no laughing matter as eternity “literally” hangs in the balance.
Your sex life is a private matter!
The amount of your salary is a private matter!
Your Social Security # is a private matter!
Your medical condition is a private matter!
Your counseling session is a private matter!
Your fraternal protocols are a private matter!
Your faith, if its object is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Second Person of the Triune God, is most certainly NOT a private matter.
I implore those who posit this heretic view of theology to repent and be reconciled to God TODAY!
As always, let me know what you think. Until then, keep your hands to the plow and seek to serve for an Audience of One.
With fear and trembling,
